Kingston upon Hull College of Education was founded in 1913 as "Hull Municipal Training College". () The first principal was Miss Helen Todd. It changed its names many times, up till September 1976 when it merged into Hull College of Higher Education, which ultimately formed part of the University of Lincoln. The stimulus for its founding was a shortage of certified teachers in the city's schools. Kingston Upon Hull College of Education trained teachers and educationalists for both the City and beyond. The ethos of the college was primarily set by Cyril Bibby, principal between 1959 and 1977.
